Five awesome attractions within walking distance of The Pomme

22 Jul 2020

For its size Jersey has a surprising amount of interesting and unique things to do for visitors of all ages. From historic sites to dolphin-spotting tours, there really is something for everything on our little rock.

The Pomme d'Or Hotel is conveniently located in central St Helier, which puts us within walking distance of many of Jersey's best loved attractions.

In this guide we explore five of our favourite things to do that are less than 10 minutes walk from our front door.

Visit The Maritime Museum

In Jersey you're never more than 10 minutes from the sea. And for as long as the island has been inhabited by humans, we've relied on the sea for transport, food and pleasure.

Through interactive exhibits, The Maritime Museum tells the story of the unique relationship between islanders and sea, documenting our rich seafaring past and exploring the future of Jersey's maritime industry.

Location

The Maritime Museum is located on The New North Quay, just a 100m stroll across Liberation Square from The Pomme.

2020 opening times

18 March to 1 November -  Every day - 10am to 5pm

2 November to 30 December - Sunday only - 10am to 4pm

Visit The Channel Islands Liquor Company distillery

Micro-distilleries are popping up all over the UK at the moment. The craze has been a little slower to catch on in Jersey, but there's a handful of local distilleries making a name for themselves with their unique liquors.

The Channel Island Liquor Co is one of those businesses.

From their Sail Loft distillery, located a 10 minute walk from The Pomme on South Pier, the Channel Islands Liquor team produce a well-crafted range of interesting gins and rums.

Private Distillery Experiences and tasting can be organised and the full range of products can be purchased directly from the producer.

Play Pétanque at the Weighbridge

Pétanque is one of Jersey's favourite pastimes, and no trip to the island should be without a visit to a Pétanque terrain to meet the locals and have a game.

Luckily for guests of the Pomme d'Or, one of Jersey's most active Pétanque terrains is located right outside the hotel's front door in Weighbridge Square.

Anyone can play and the rules of pétanque are very simple. Just pick up a set of boules from reception and head out to enjoy one of Jersey's best loved games.

Hire a bike and take a scenic cycle to St Aubins

Although not technically an activity that is on our doorstep, bicycles are one the best modes of transport to explore Jersey.

One of the island's most popular cycle routes takes you from St Helier to the picturesque harbour village of St Aubin, and the starting point for the ride is just across Liberation Square from the hotel at St Helier Marina.

From the marina you'll head west along a shared cycle/pedestrian path, past The Waterfront Complex, until you reach the cycle path that runs right alongside the beach all the way to St Aubin.

Bikes can be hired at multiple stops along the way. The brand new Evie electric bikes service can be picked up at multiple locations across the island, particularly in St Helier, and is simple to use thanks to their freebike app. Go to their website to learn more.

Visit Elizabeth Castle

Elizabeth Castle is one of Jersey's most significant historic monuments. Dating back to the 16th century, the castle has played a lead role in some of the island's most notable moments, from providing refuge to Charles II during the English Civil War to its refortification by the Nazis during the occupation.

At low tide the castle can be accessed on foot via the causeway. Once the tide comes in, visitors can take the ferry from the Elizabeth Castle Ferry Kiosk located opposite The Grand Hotel, a ten minute stroll from the Pomme d'Or.

2020 opening times

18 March to 1 November - Every day - 10am to 5.30pm

9 and 10 September - Closed

2 November to 31 December - Closed
