Delicious al fresco dining in St Helier

04 Jun 2021

Nothing says holiday like enjoying good food and drink in the sunshine while the rest of the world goes about their daily routines. And there are more al fresco options than ever before in the town of St Helier, with restaurants and eateries increasingly making the most of their outdoor space.

The Pomme d'Or's central location puts it within whistling distance of some brilliant eateries with lovely al fresco spaces. Here are a three St Helier based establishments we recommend for outdoor eating and drinking.

Great for brunch in the sun - The Yard

Just a 1 minute walk across Weighbridge Place from our hotel, The Yard is a must-do for any foodie visiting Jersey. Nestled neatly in the grounds of Jersey Museum, this modern eatery is renowned for its creative dishes that taste as good as they look.

On good weather days, The Yard's courtyard is flooded with sunlight, making it the perfect location for a spot of brunch before you head to the beach.

The Yard's menu is a real treat. The team take the best local ingredients and prepare creative dishes you won't find on the average Jersey menu. Our particular favourites are the aromatic Potato & Cauliflower hash, which uses the island's famous Jersey Royal potatoes, and the show stopping Bacon & Charcoal bun.

You won't find a full English breakfast on the menu here, but if you're up for an adventure or you prefer a plant-based diet, then make time for a trip to the yard.

Great for a long lunch - Relish

Relish owner Florian de Poray outside his much loved delicatessen.

Situated just outside the Central Market in the historical quarter of St Helier is Relish, one of the Channel Islands' finest delicatessens.

Owned and managed by the incredibly friendly and highly knowledgable Florian de Poray, Relish has built a reputation for fantastic wine, high quality charcuterie and seafood platters, and a heavenly range of cheeses.

A mouthwatering example of the platters that Relish is renowned for.

It's the attention to detail that makes the Relish experience so enjoyable. Our advice is to turn up, tell Florian or his knowledgable team what you're into and let them make the food and drink choices.

Relish's al fresco tables extend out into the pedestrianised area on the corner of Market Street and Halkett Street. On a nice day this quiet little backstreet is a vibrant sun trap. Amongst the olive trees it's easy to spend a sunny afternoon enjoying fine food and watching the world go by.

Great for a summer evening feast - Sangria

Sangria's Al fresco dining area in the Royal Square, St Helier, Jersey

The Royal Square is steeped in history, but for foodies the main attraction has to be Jersey's finest Spanish-inspired tapas bar and restaurant, Sangria.

This beautifully styled restaurant gives the best island delicacies - including crab, scallops and fresh veg - a uniquely Spanish twist.

Fresh seafood, tapas style. A must eat at Sangria.

On warm summer evenings the al fresco area out front has a fantastic vibe. Food is ordered, prepared and delivered tapas style. The menu is compact, but perfectly crafted. Whatever you order, you're unlikely to be disappointed.

Vegetarians needn't be put off by the odd leg of Iberico Jamon on display, as Sangria's vegetarian options are plentiful and absolutely packed full of flavour.

Don't miss the house Sangria - and if the weather is going to be a little chilly, take a coat. The al fresco area really is the best way to enjoy this uniquely Jersey-style Spanish restaurant.

For more info and bookings, click here and head to Sangria's Facebook page.

A shout out for our sister hotel - Greenhills

Whilst not strictly in keeping with the headline of this blog, our sister hotel Greenhills has a gorgeous al fresco garden that's open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and our ever-popular afternoon tea.

Greenhills' garden is a stunning spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

If it's the very best local delicacies you want to try on your trip to Jersey, then the good news is Greenhills Head Chef Lukasz Piestrasz has just released his Spring & Summer à la carte menu.

Escape the hustle and bustle of St Helier for an afternoon. Greenhills is a 20 minute bus ride from the central bus station opposite the Pomme d'Or.
