When the surf's flat, join us for a Flowride!
Surfing has a long history in Jersey. The island is home to Europe's oldest surfboard club and ever since the South African lifeguards arrived in the 1950s, locals and visitors have made the most of waves that break on the western beaches.
But during summer, swells in Jersey can be few and far between and the sea often goes flat. Great for swimmers, boaties and fisherman but less than ideal for the island's surfers.
That's why in 2008 the Seymour family took the decision to install the Channel Islands first Flowrider™ at the Merton.
What is the Flowrider and how does it work?
The Flowrider™ shoots a thin layer of water up a soft plastic slope, creating a continuous wave that can be ridden on bodyboards and flowboards, whatever the weather.
Flowboarding combines elements of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding into a fun water based sport that's suitable for both children and adults. Falling hardly hurts at all and this makes flowboarding a safe sport. If you fall off, just get up and go - again, again and again!
How do I ride the Flowrider?
Regardless of whether you're on a bodyboard or flowboard, the first piece of advice to any Flowrider™ novice is to lean back at all times. This stops the front of your board catching the water and flipping you off.
You'll learn the rest from our experienced Flowrider™ instructors during your session.
