Claudio CamaraHead Gardener, Merton Hotel
How did Seymour Hotels help you get to where you are today?
Seymour Hotels have helped me improve my professional skills in many different ways over the years, increasing my hunger to learn and making me comfortable in the workplace. I first worked as a gardener on work experience with the Jersey Employment Trust (JET) which then developed into a paid permanent position.
What’s the best thing about being Head Gardener at The Merton?
The opportunity to develop the staff that I supervise in the garden department and improving my management skills. I enjoy being able to organise and monitor staff, ensuring they provide excellent service. I enjoy the autonomy of designing the gardens, purchasing the plants and liaising with management to ensure that they are happy with my proposals.
Where’s your favourite place in Jersey?
Durrell Zoo! Although they could do with some advice in regards to planting ;)
What would your advice be to someone thinking of moving to the island to work at The Merton?
The nurturing and developing environment has allowed me to blossom from an assistant to the head gardener. You are treated as part of a family and management provide an open door policy so I can express my feelings on any subject whenever I wish. A truly great place to work.< View all Our People
